Nts’ekalle flies Lesotho’s flag high internationally

blog-photo-2019-06-05-04

Nthabeleng Nts’ekalle – HER Voice Ambassador, Lesotho

I work for an NGO called Lesotho Network of AIDS Service Organizations (LENASO). We advocate for people to test for HIV, screen for TB and other primary health care services. We work at the grassroots linking people to care and treatment and we work to ensure that they adhere to treatment. We work in the hardest-to-reach areas. My country is mountainous – often called the kingdom in the sky. It’s a rough terrain. Sometimes we must ride horses for two days to reach people most in need, where the girls have very limited information about HIV and how to protect themselves from the disease.

We need to find a way to get the information we share in these meetings to the communities. The communities where we work don’t know about essential tools like PrEP (pre-exposure prophylaxis). Some don’t even know how to use condoms. Saying that these tools are available is not enough. Providing information on contraceptives and prevention tools as well as making sure that these tools are available in places where these girls can access them are issues that are very dear to me. Leaders, priests, parents should be provided with information to know how important the knowledge and the tools to prevent HIV and other diseases are to us. We should have information and education all ‘round – to the girls, to the leaders, to the parents.

Ms Nts’ekalle is one of the many Basotho youth leaders who flew the country’s flag high at Women Deliver conference in Vancouver, Canada. MR.

Women Deliver comes to an end

Vancouver, Canada – Today is the last day of the Women Deliver conference.

It is said to be the world’s largest conference on gender equality and the health, rights, and wellbeing of girls and women in the 21st century — there were approximately 8000 participants from over 100 countries.

Lesotho delegate was led by Dr. Pontso Sekatle, MP. There were four Basotho girls brought here by independent organisations and all presented on various topics – from sexual reproductive health to menstruation.

Present African head of states included President of Ghana, Nana Akufo-Addo, Uhuru Kenyatta and Sahle Work-Zwede, from Kenya and Ethiopia respectively. Natasha Wang Mwansa, from Lusaka, Zambia stile the show by advocating for youth inclusivity in a panel that included four head of states so much that she received a standing ovation.

The conference will take place again in three years time. Now, the work starts for Lesotho to allow girls and women to be architects of their future by letting their voices to be heard. With a delegate from the Office of the First Lady and independent organisations, expections are high that the conference will yield great results from the Mountain Kingdom.

Investment in young girls and women has a triple effect and id a direct investment in economic growth. Putting more girls on schools has direct correlation with decreased old marriage and increased opportunities for women entering the labour market.

Is Lesotho ready to fight against the push backs of culture and societal stereo types? Improve on the progress it has made? Time will tell. The time is now.
